We advocate and assist: ADL works with elected officials and policy makers at the federal, state and local levels to ensure they protect the civil rights of all Americans. We have spearheaded victories– including the creation of hate crime laws in 45 states–and filed legal briefs in some of the nation’s most important civil rights cases. We also work with social media platforms to combat cyberhate. Finally, we engage diverse coalitions, companies and individuals to amplify our message and join others in the fight against hate and bias. For example:

  • ADL testified before the New York City Council for the Protect Our Courts Act, a bill that would ensure access to courts for all New Yorkers regardless of immigration status.
  • ADL trained law enforcement officials in New York and New Jersey on how to better recognize, investigate and report hate crimes through our Managing Implicit Bias programs.
  • The FBI invited the ADL to their Hate Crimes Symposium to speak on their community panel about responding to bias and hate incidents.
  • ADL met with key elected officials including New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal, Attorney General of New York Letitia James, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, as well as other city and state leaders to advocate for ADL’s core issues.
  • In 2018, ADL’s Center for Technology and Society (CTS) consulted on issues of tech industry regulation with three international governments. CTS also provided numerous policy consultations to leading technology companies in Silicon Valley, whose policies govern the fight against online hate.
