ADL Deeply Troubled by Alleged Anti-Semitic Incident in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

  • July 7, 2015

New York, NY, July 7, 2015 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today said it is deeply troubled by reports of an anti-Semitic incident in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in which an Orthodox Jewish individual allegedly suffered a physical attack on Wythe Street.

According to reports, the victim, who was returning home from his synagogue on July 6, was approached by two suspects and subsequently struck by an object.

“Jews in Brooklyn have unfortunately suffered from some deeply troubling anti-Semitic incidents recently – from Holocaust graffiti on the outside of a Yeshiva in Flatbush, to the ransacking of a Jewish business in Crown Heights, to a visibly identifiable Orthodox Jew being targeted for violence at a subway station,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York Regional Director. “All of these incidents continue to make our community feel highly vulnerable.”

Mr. Bernstein added, “Our annual numbers on anti-Jewish acts across the city tell us that the Jewish community is not immune to anti-Semitism, however we are confident because the NYPD continues to investigate these horrific anti-Jewish acts with the utmost seriousness.”

According to ADL’s Annual Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents, which identifies both criminal and non-criminal acts, New York City experienced 147 incidents in 2014, including 55 in Brooklyn.
