ADL Shocked and Outraged Over Apparent Racist Murder in Manhattan

  • March 23, 2017

New York, NY, March 23, 2017 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today expressed shock and outrage over the apparent racist killing of an African American man in New York City.

According to reports, on March, 20, James Jackson from Baltimore drove to New York City deliberately to attack black men before using a sword to fatally stab Timothy Caughman, who he apparently selected at random in Manhattan. Jackson was arrested on March 22, and was arraigned today for murder as a hate crime.

“There are no words to sufficiently express our shock and outrage over this heinous and senseless attack,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York Regional Director. “Race-based violence has a horrific history in this country and we are shaken by what appears to be another unconscionable hate crime in New York City.

“Even as we grieve, we are glad this suspect has been arrested and remain resolved to continue to fight hate crimes with all of the tools available and by exposing violence motivated by hate,” Mr. Bernstein said.
