In Wake of Swastikas at Nassau Community College, ADL Says: No Student Should Be Made to Feel Vulnerable on Campus

New York, NY, December 9, 2016 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today said it was concerned over symbols of hate discovered at Nassau Community College (NCC).

On December 8, three swastikas were reportedly found scrawled on the NCC campus on a stair hand rail and on a wall. According to law enforcement, the school was the victim of three similar incidents in October.

“We are concerned to see hateful graffiti continue to surface at Nassau Community College,” said Evan R. Bernstein, New York Regional Director. “Institutions of learning must be a safe space for all students. No one should ever be subjected to such hateful anti-Semitic imagery or be made to feel vulnerable on campus. We hope Nassau Community College leadership will do all it can to discourage such acts of hate and encourage respect among its student body.”

ADL’s Center on Extremism has been monitoring the proliferation of racist and anti-Semitic graffiti and vandalism, including the use of swastikas and other Nazi imagery across the country, as well as reports of assaults and harassment and has established a new reporting mechanism where the public can report any anti-Semitic, racist or bigoted incidents, and encouraged social media users to promote the hashtag #ExposeHate.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.  Follow us on Twitter: @ADL_NY
