ISIS-Related Arrests in New York Portend Troubling Nationwide Problem, ADL Says

  • February 25, 2015

New York, NY, February 25, 2015 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) applauded federal law enforcement officials for their arrests, announced today, of three Brooklyn residents charged with conspiring to provide material support to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the latest individuals to be implicated in the U.S. on terrorism offenses relating to ISIS.

Akhror Saidakhmetov was arrested at Kennedy Airport, where he was trying to board a flight to Istanbul, Turkey, and then allegedly planned to travel to Syria for the purpose of waging jihad on behalf of ISIS. Abror Habibov provided funds, and Akhror Saidakhmetov and Abdurasul Hasanovich Juraboev allegedly threatened to carry out attacks on domestic targets if they failed in their attempt to travel overseas.

“These arrests underscore the threat posed by ISIS and its ideology on domestic security, including right here in New York City,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York Regional Director. “We hope these arrests will also serve as a meaningful deterrent for others who might attempt to aid other terrorist plots and terrorist organizations.”

In 2015, ten U.S. residents from four states have been arrested on ISIS-related terror charges. According to ADL, at least 19 American citizens and permanent residents were linked to ISIS in 2014.

ADL is closely tracking the growing and increasingly dangerous domestic terror threat posed by Americans motivated by radical interpretations of Islam. Its recent report – “Homegrown Islamic Extremism in 2014: The Rise of ISIS & Sustained Online Recruitment” – explores the impact of ISIS other Islamic terrorist groups have on domestic security through the radicalization and recruitment of American citizens and residents.

ADL commended Loretta E. Lynch, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, John P. Carlin, Assistant Attorney General for National Security; Diego G. Rodriguez, Assistant Director-in-Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), New York Field Office; and William J. Bratton, Commissioner, New York City Police Department (NYPD) for their leadership.
